Running The Mind
My name is Joseph Renguso and I took my first steps as a runner in 1983. I ran crosscountry and track throughout high school and for a short period of time in college. I have been road racing on a regular basis since 1987.
I have coached runners of all abilities since 1995. I have mainly coached high school runners to obtain goals as simple as running a certain distance without stopping to becoming Foot Locker All-Americans. As for adults I have coached runners who were looking for pr’s in any distance from the 5k to marathon, to individuals looking to qualify for the Olympic Marathon Trials.

I have been a licensed psychotherapist since 1998. I conduct individual adult and adolescent counseling within a private practice setting. Counseling with me is about choice, goals, and movement. Understanding that you are making a choice to improve your life, setting goals to do so, and taking action to make it happen.
For several years I have spent time researching and studying different training methodologies so I could become a better runner, and more importantly, a better coach. What I have found, or not found, is anything about mental training for runners. I have heard many times that running is more mental than physical. This can be debated but what I do know is that your mind is very powerful. When a runner starts to get tired he/she starts to think about things going wrong more often than letting in positive thoughts. A runner might start saying things such as “my legs are starting to hurt,” or “this run is getting very hard to finish.” When we start thinking like this our bodies listen and start breaking down even though they still have a lot more in them. The body is usually stronger and can handle a lot more than we think it can. But if we tell it that it hurts, it will listen and begin to hurt, or hurt even more.
This is why I created Running The Mind and it’s first product, Trance State Running. I took my background and experience as a runner, coach, and psychotherapist and developed a product that will help runners get back to a comfortable, relaxed running state when they break down on a run. By doing so, you can stop or stall those negative thoughts, go back to a controlled, comfortable and relaxed state of mind and body and continue to run the way you want to. Just like physically running, the more you practice Trance State Running the better you will get at it.
